QR Codes

Two kinds of code. A plain one carries its information itself: a link, a Wi-Fi network, a contact card, an email, a phone number or a text message. It is built on your device, it never expires, and nothing needs to be running anywhere for it to work.

An editable code points at a short link instead, so you can change where it goes after it has been printed on a menu, a poster or a van. That is the part other sites charge a monthly fee for.

Here is the part worth reading twice: if your subscription ends, your editable codes carry on redirecting. Scanning a code never checks whether anyone is paying. You lose the ability to change where a code points until you subscribe again, and that is all. The trade practised elsewhere, where a printed code stops working the moment a trial ends, is the reason this app exists.

Downloads come as SVG as well as PNG. An SVG has no fixed resolution, so the same file is a sticker and a shop window.

Any editable code can be checked before it is followed: add a + to the end of the short link and the page shows where it goes instead of taking you there, along with a way to report it. Destinations are checked against Google’s list of known phishing and malware sites when a code is made or changed, and a code found to be abusing the service can be blocked by us in a way its owner cannot undo.

Wi-Fi passwords and contact details typed into the plain codes stay on your device; they are never sent anywhere. Editable codes necessarily store their destination, because a server has to answer the redirect.
