Do QR codes expire?

A plain code can’t: the web address or the Wi-Fi password is inside the squares, so nothing can switch it off. An editable code goes through a short link, so it works as long as that link does. Ours keep redirecting if you stop paying; some services switch theirs off when a trial ends.

Is there a free QR code generator that never expires?

Yes, for plain codes. Ours makes them free with no account, and Adobe Express and QR Code Monkey make codes that never expire too, as does your phone’s own share menu in Chrome. Pay when you want to change a code after it’s printed, or see how often it’s scanned.

How to make a QR code that never expires

Four steps, then a size that scans from where people will stand.

  1. Pick what it should do.

    A link, Wi-Fi, a contact card, some text, an email, a call or a text message.

  2. Fill in the details.

    The code appears as you type. Plain codes are made on your device, so a Wi-Fi password never leaves it.

  3. Plain or editable?

    Plain if it’ll never change. Editable for anything printed that might: a menu, a poster, a sign.

  4. Check it, then download.

    The app reads the code back before you download. SVG for print, PNG for screens.

A rule of thumb, not a standard: people can scan a code from about ten times its width. Keep the blank margin round it, and print anything busier, like a contact card, a size up.

Scanning safely

How do you check a QR code before opening it?

  • Look at the address first.

    Most phone cameras show the link before opening it. Check the name is the one you expect. The FTC’s advice: inspect the URL before you open it.

  • Watch for stickers.

    A code stuck over another one, on a parking meter or a poster, is a known trick. The FBI warns about exactly this.

  • For our short links, add a +.

    implements.app/q/k3m9tbq+ shows where a code goes without going there. Every address is checked against Google’s list of known phishing and malware sites when it’s set, though no list catches everything.

Can a scratched code still scan?

Arrow keys move over the code. Space or Enter scratches it.

Every code carries spare data. Medium can rebuild about 15% of it, High about 30%, which is why a logo can sit in the middle. The corner squares matter most: scanners use them to find the code.

What’s inside a Wi-Fi code?

The network name and the password, written out. Scan it and your phone offers to join, with no typing. That also means anyone who can see the code can join, so keep it to the guest network. QR Codes makes it on your device, so the password never leaves it.

Can I put my logo in the middle?

Yes, with High error correction: the logo covers squares the code can rebuild. Keep it to about a fifth of the width, keep the code darker than its background, and check it scans. The app reads it back before you download.

Do QR codes expire?

What’s the difference between a static and a dynamic QR code?
A static code, which QR Codes calls plain, carries the address itself. A dynamic code, which QR Codes calls editable, carries a short link, so you can change where it goes without changing the squares.
Can I change where a QR code goes after printing?
Only if it’s editable. Change where it goes in the app, and everyone who scans the printed code goes to the new address. A plain code would need reprinting.
What happens to my codes if I stop paying?
Plain codes: nothing, they’re yours. Editable codes keep redirecting; you can’t change them or make new ones until you renew.
How do I make a Wi-Fi QR code?
Pick Wi-Fi, then type the network name and password exactly as your phone shows them. The password stays on your device, but anyone who can see the code can join, so use it for a guest network.
SVG or PNG?
SVG for anything printed: it has no fixed size, so it’s sharp on a sticker or a shop window. PNG for screens and documents, from 512 to 2048 pixels.
How big should I print a QR code?
About a tenth of the distance people will scan from, and at least 2 cm (¾ in) wide. That’s a rule of thumb, not a standard, so test it where it’ll hang.
Can I put a logo in the middle?
