    It works well, until you’re at the store and the list is at home.

  2. Write it as you go.

    Type a task and press Enter for the next. Each one saves on the device the moment you add it.

    Break a task into a short checklist. It shows how far along you are, until you check it off yourself.

    On the ferry, the list still works. Changes wait on the phone, and it says how many.

How it works

How does an offline to-do list sync?

In plain words, and the same on every device.

  1. It saves on your device first.

    Adding, ticking off, editing and deleting happen on the device, so they never wait for the network.

  2. No signal? Keep going.

    On a ferry, in a tunnel, in the woods. Changes wait on the device, and the app says how many.

  3. Back online, the others catch up.

    Whenever the app is open and online, it sends what it saved and picks up everything else. An iPhone can’t sync with the app closed, so open it once you’re back.

  4. The same task, changed twice?

    If two devices changed the same task while offline, the most recent change to each part of it wins, so a rename on one and a tick on the other both stay. New tasks from both are kept, once each.

Deleted means deleted

A deleted task is kept out of sight for up to 30 days, so a device that was offline when you deleted it can’t bring it back. Then it’s gone for good.

Logging out asks first

Logging out clears the list from that device. If some changes haven’t synced yet, the app says so and suggests getting online first.

What people ask before trusting a list with their week.

Does it work with no signal at all?

Yes, once it’s been opened on that device. Add it to your home screen and it opens like any other app, straight to your list, with or without a signal. The first visit needs a connection to load it.

Why write tasks down at all?

In a 2011 study, people who wrote a specific plan for an unfinished goal stopped having it pop into their heads. In a 2018 sleep study, people who wrote a to-do list at bedtime fell asleep faster than people who listed what they’d already done. In both, being specific mattered: write “Call the vet”, not “Biscuit”.

If both change the same part of a task while offline, the most recent change wins when they sync, and a rename on one and a tick on the other both stay. Tasks added on either one are all kept, once each.

Which to-do apps work offline?

Several say so on their own help pages. Todoist keeps offline changes and syncs them when you reconnect; Things works offline; Any.do lets you view and add items. To-do List saves everything on the device first, so offline is the normal way it works, not a fallback.

What’s a good Wunderlist alternative?

Microsoft closed Wunderlist on May 6, 2020 and pointed people to Microsoft To Do, which is free. If what you miss is a plain list that works everywhere, including offline, that’s what To-do List is.
