How to merge PDFs on an iPhone.

On iOS 26 and later, Apple’s Preview app merges PDFs on the phone: open one, tap Insert from File to add another, then drag the pages into order. Adobe Acrobat online, Smallpdf and iLovePDF merge for free too, but they upload your files to their servers first.

In short

Updated

On iOS 26 and later, Apple’s Preview app merges PDFs: open one, touch and hold a page thumbnail, tap Insert from File, and drag pages into order. Apple’s guides don’t describe joining PDFs in the Files app or with Shortcuts. Adobe Acrobat online merges up to 100 files free in Safari, though its help says most tools allow one free task without signing in. Smallpdf, iLovePDF and PDF24 are free too. All four upload your files: Smallpdf and PDF24 delete them after an hour, iLovePDF within two, and Adobe “soon” if you don’t sign in. For a lease or a tax return, a merger that runs in the browser doesn’t upload them at all.

Comparison

Where your PDFs go when you merge them.

Preview and a merger that runs in the browser don’t send the files to a merge website. The websites upload them.

Which free merger takes the most files?

Of the ones that give a number, Adobe Acrobat online: up to 100 files and 1,500 pages. PDF24 says it has no limits. iLovePDF’s free plan takes 25 files and 100 MB a task. Our free merger takes 3 PDFs at a time.

Do I need an account to merge PDFs?

Not for most of these. Preview, PDF24 and our free merger need no account. Adobe’s merge page says no subscription is needed, but its help says most tools allow one free task without signing in, and you sign in to move single pages or keep the file.

How to merge PDFs with Preview on iPhone

Preview is Apple’s app for PDFs and images, and the iPhone User Guide covers it for iOS 26 and later. It opens files “without opening the Files app first,” and nothing goes to a merge website.

  • Open the first PDF and tap the page count to show the thumbnails. If it doesn’t appear, tap the PDF; on iOS 26, pinch the page instead.
  • Touch and hold a thumbnail, tap Insert from File, and choose the next PDF. Repeat for each file.
  • Put the pages in order: touch and hold a thumbnail, then drag it above or below another. Delete Page drops one you don’t need.

Apple doesn’t say whether added pages land before or after the one you held, so check the thumbnails. To keep the first PDF as it was, tap the button next to its filename and choose Duplicate before you start. Preview can add a fresh scan too, with Scan Pages.

Online tools

What the merge websites do with your files

  • Adobe Acrobat online merges up to 100 files into one PDF of up to 1,500 pages, with no watermark, in a phone browser and with “no subscription needed to merge.” Its help says that without signing in, most tools allow one free task. Moving single pages needs you to sign in, which saves the file to your Adobe account. Adobe’s iPhone app, Acrobat Reader, lists combining files under paid features.
  • Smallpdf sends files to servers in the European Union and deletes them after one hour. You can rearrange and delete pages before merging. The free plan has “Limited document downloads”, a daily limit on Merge with no number given.
  • iLovePDF takes up to 25 files and 100 MB a task for free. You drag the files into order, and it keeps them “for a maximum of 2 hours.”
  • PDF24 merges on its servers in Germany, with no registration, and deletes files after one hour. It says it has no limits, and it’s paid for by ads.

Uploading

What uploading means for a private document

Uploading sends a copy of each PDF to the company’s computers, where it stays until it’s deleted. You’re trusting the company to protect it and delete it on time. For a flyer, that hardly matters. For a lease, a pay stub or a tax return, it’s worth skipping the merge website.

Some converter sites are worse. In March 2025 the FBI’s Denver field office warned that criminals use free online converters, including ones that claim to combine files, that do the job but can hide malware in the result and scrape the files for personal details, banking information and passwords. It advises scanning any file you receive before opening it.

One more option

Where PDF Kit fits

The free PDF merger is ours. It joins up to 3 PDFs at a time in your browser, so nothing is uploaded, with no account and no watermark. Move each file up or down, and type the pages you want from each, like 1-3, 5. On iPhone you pick them from the Files app, including iCloud Drive. Nothing is kept once you leave the page.

PDF Kit, the full app, isn’t free: it comes with implements, $4.99 a month or $49.99 a year for every tool. It merges any number of files, has fourteen PDF tools, from page numbers to a password, and works offline once it has been opened; on iPhone, add it to the Home Screen for that. The free page isn’t built to work offline.

Preview does more with single pages and is built in, and Adobe’s free merge takes far more files at once.

Questions

Questions people ask.

Short answers, in plain words. Something missing? Ask Support and we’ll add it here.

What if my iPhone doesn’t have Preview?
Apple’s guide covers it for iOS 26 and later. Otherwise, use a merger in Safari: Adobe’s uploads your files, and one that runs in the browser doesn’t.
Can I combine PDFs in the Files app or with Shortcuts?
Apple’s iPhone and Shortcuts guides don’t describe a way, though many how-to pages mention a Create PDF option in Files. Apple documents Create PDF only in Finder on a Mac. On iPhone, Apple documents Preview’s Insert from File.
Does the Acrobat app on iPhone merge PDFs for free?
Not without a subscription. Its App Store listing puts combining files under paid features, with a 7-day free trial. Adobe’s merge website works in Safari and uploads your files.
Is it safe to upload PDFs to a merge website?
The four sites here say they delete files within an hour or two, or “soon” at Adobe, and until then you’re trusting them. The bigger risk is a malicious converter site: in March 2025 the FBI’s Denver field office warned that some hide malware in the file they return.
