What do Invoice Simple’s paid plans cost?

Essentials is $6.99 a month or $69.99 a year, for 3 invoices a month. Plus is $14.99 a month or $149.99 a year, for 10. Premium is $21.99 a month or $219.99 a year, with no limit. Prices are in US dollars and may vary by local currency.

What’s the best free alternative to Invoice Simple?

For unlimited invoices at no cost, Wave’s Starter plan, if Wave’s branding in the footer doesn’t bother you. Zoho Invoice is free for up to 500 invoices a year, and Invoice Ninja for up to 5 clients. To be paid by card from the invoice, PayPal and Square charge only when a payment arrives.

The free plan

Does Invoice Simple have a free plan?

No. Its pricing page reads “Start for Free then Choose the Best Plan for Your Business”, and the free part is a trial. Invoice Simple’s help center says every user gets 14 days of Premium free: unlimited invoices and estimates, premium templates, online payments and deposits. When the trial ends, you choose a plan.

One of its getting-started articles describes the phone app differently: up to 2 free documents and 1 send, with no credit card, and then a plan. Either way, no plan stays at $0.

The Try It Free buttons open its web invoice generator, which makes PDFs it calls “always 100% unbranded”, with or without an account, but doesn’t say how many you can make before it asks for a plan.

The limits

What does each Invoice Simple plan allow?

Essentials allows up to 3 invoices a month, counted from the start of your billing month to its end. It includes saved clients and items, read receipts, the phone app, and online payments by card, PayPal or, in the US, Venmo.

Plus raises that to 10 a month and adds photos, your signature, summary reports and due date reminders. Premium removes the cap and adds client signatures, premium templates, deposits and restoring previous invoices.

Its help pages don’t say what happens at the fourth invoice of a month on Essentials, only that if you’re close to your limit, “it might be time to explore more bandwidth.” You can change plans at any time and keep your invoices and clients; changes to limits apply from the next billing cycle.

Free alternatives

Free alternatives to Invoice Simple

  • Wave’s Starter plan is $0 for unlimited invoices and estimates, with your logo and colors. You send them as links or PDFs; sending from Wave and automatic reminders need its online payments, at 2.9% + $0.60 a card payment, or Pro, which also removes Wave’s footer branding for $19 a month or $190 a year.
  • Zoho Invoice calls itself “forever-free”: up to 500 invoices a year, two users and three projects, with “Powered by Zoho Invoice” branding and no ads. If you don’t sign in for 180 days, Zoho deletes your data within the next 20, after telling you.
  • Invoice Ninja’s free plan takes unlimited invoices for up to 5 clients, with your logo, a client portal and payments through a gateway you connect, such as Stripe or PayPal. Pro, $14 a month or $140 a year, lifts the client cap and removes “Created by Invoice Ninja”.
  • PayPal Invoicing has no setup or monthly fees, and your customer needs no PayPal account to pay. In the US, a paid invoice costs you 3.49% + $0.49 through PayPal or Venmo, 2.99% + $0.49 by card, or 1% by bank, capped at $10.
  • Square’s free plan includes invoices with no monthly cost. An invoice paid online by card costs 3.3% + 30¢.

One more option

Where Invoice fits

Invoice is ours, and it isn’t free: it comes with implements, $4.99 a month or $49.99 a year for every tool, with no ads. There’s no monthly count and no cap on clients; an account keeps up to 2,000 invoices, each with up to 100 lines. Your client opens a link with no account and can download the PDF, with your logo and color in one of 3 layouts, on Letter or A4. Draft, Sent and Paid are one tap each.

It doesn’t take card payments, email the invoice or send reminders: you send the link yourself, and your client pays you directly. To be paid by card from the invoice, Wave, PayPal or Square does more. If your subscription ends, you can still open every invoice and download its PDF, and the links you sent keep working; making or changing one waits until you’re back. If you send a few invoices a month, Zoho Invoice or Wave costs nothing.
