From each company’s own site, help center and store listings, with US prices from the US App Store, checked October 7, 2026. Names are trademarks of their owners; implements isn’t affiliated with them. Tricount’s Google Play listing says “Contains ads”. On a wider screen the table adds Settle Up, free with ads, and Kittysplit, free for up to 9 people.

Is there a free Splitwise alternative with no ads?

Spliit: no ads, no account, open source. Tricount’s own pages say no ads, though its Google Play listing carries the “Contains ads” label. Settle Up shows ads until you pay.

Do my friends need the app or an account?

Spliit and Kittysplit work from a link in any browser, with no sign-up, and Settle Up shows the balance in a browser. A Tricount link opens its app or the app store; on SplitMyExpenses, friends join by an invite link and can register.

Why people switch

Why look for a Splitwise alternative?

Splitwise’s free plan lets you add up to 4 expenses a day, and it shows ads; Pro removes both. Four a day runs out on the first day of a trip. Our guide to the limit covers the workarounds and what Pro adds.

The alternatives

Six Splitwise alternatives, one by one

  • Tricount is free, with no daily expense cap. It records costs in different currencies and shows the trip total in one, and works offline. A shared link opens the app or sends friends to the store. It’s tied to bunq: new users get a bunq account when they sign up.
  • Spliit is free and open source, with no ads and no account, paid for by donations. Its website works in a phone’s browser, with every split mode and currency. The iPhone app needs iOS 26; there’s no Android app yet.
  • Settle Up lets friends view the balance in a browser without the app. The free version shows ads. Premium removes them and adds receipt photos, for $3.99 a month or $19.99 a year in the US App Store. Group Premium, a one-time payment, covers everyone in one group.
  • Kittysplit is free for up to 9 people, in any browser, with sign-up optional, and anyone with the link can add expenses. Several currencies, receipts and up to 100 people need Super Kitty, €2.99 once per group (Kittysplit prices in euros).
  • Splid is a free app that converts between more than 150 currencies, works offline and needs no sign-up. Its US App Store listing sells Splid Plus for $3.99 and 2 Groups for $2.99, with no term given, and makes Excel export an in-app purchase. It doesn’t say what else free leaves out.
  • SplitMyExpenses runs on the web, iPhone and Android. The free plan has no AI receipt itemizing; Unlimited is $3.99 a month. Friends join by an invite link and, its site says, “can register to the platform.”

A shared spreadsheet costs nothing, if someone is happy to do the sums.

Which one

Which one for which situation

  • One trip with friends. Spliit if nobody should install anything, Kittysplit if you’re 9 or fewer, Tricount if everyone’s happy with an app.
  • A shared household. Costs come a few at a time, so Splitwise’s free 4 a day may be enough. If the ads are the problem, Spliit has none. For rent and bills that repeat, SplitMyExpenses’ free plan keeps up to 10 recurring expenses.
  • A couple. Two people rarely outgrow a free plan: Splitwise’s 4 a day may be enough at home, and Kittysplit’s cap of 9 never comes up. Spliit needs no app at all.
  • A group across currencies. Tricount shows the total in one currency, Settle Up uses real-time rates and Splid converts between more than 150, all free to start. Kittysplit needs Super Kitty for more than one currency.

One more option

Where Trip Split fits

Trip Split is ours, and it isn’t free: it comes with implements, $4.99 a month or $49.99 a year for every tool, with no ads. There’s no daily limit; a trip holds up to 500 costs and 50 people. Friends open one link and see every cost, their balance and how to pay you, with no app and no account: a Pay button for PayPal or Cash App, or your Venmo or Zelle name to copy.

The link is for viewing: only you add costs, while in Spliit and Kittysplit anyone with the link can. Each trip uses one currency, needs a connection and keeps no receipts. For a trip across currencies, Tricount, Settle Up or Splid does more; Tricount and Splid also work offline, and Tricount and Spliit keep receipt photos.

Questions

Questions people ask.

Short answers, in plain words. Something missing? Ask Support and we’ll add it here.

Is there a Splitwise alternative without a daily limit?
Yes. Tricount says it has no daily expense cap and no limit on expenses. Trip Split has no daily limit either, but it isn’t free.
Is Tricount really free?
Yes. Its App Store listing says there’s no subscription and no limit on tricounts or expenses. The catch: new users get a bunq account automatically when they sign up.
Is there an open-source Splitwise alternative?
Spliit. Its code is on GitHub under the MIT license, it works in a browser as a web app, and its hosting is paid for by donations.
Can I move my Splitwise history to another app?
Partly. Splitwise exports a group’s or a friend’s expenses as a spreadsheet. Tricount imports a Splitwise group, Kittysplit rebuilds expenses from the export, and Settle Up imports members and balances. Trip Split downloads a trip as a CSV file but doesn’t import one.
